Creating a product vision for events analytics

Hopin

Challenge

Hopin analytics area was developed to satisfy the basic reporting needs of organisers and it didn’t efficiently and easily help them measure and track their events’ performance. In this project, we wanted to define a design vision for the tool, so that organisers could make better and more informed decisions about their events.

My role & team

As the lead product designer, I was responsible for the design process from concept to delivery. I also led user research activities. I was collaborating closely with product owners, and the engineering team.

Process

I run an ideation workshop with the agile team and product stakeholders. We described our users based on a shared understanding of who our event organisers were, what were their goals, what were their frustrations, and their expectations when using the analytics tool. We then generated, first individually and then in groups, ideas that would meet our user needs. Ideas were discussed, reviewed, and prioritised based on user experience principles, technical feasibility, and business value.

I then ran a user research study consisting of two parts. In the first part, I wanted to uncover how organisers track their events’ performance and define success. This allowed us to gain a broad understanding of opportunities for analytics. In the second part of the interview, we focussed on the current analytics functionality. The aim was to understand any improvements we needed to make to its user experience.

Findings from our user research helped us to validate our assumptions about our users and more accurately refine and prioritise the solutions generated in our workshop.

I worked iteratively further refining our design ideas, moving from low-fidelity to high-fidelity prototypes.

I ran usability tests to evaluate my designs and used the learnings to further refine the designs.

I contributed to our federated design system with accessible data visualisation colours and components.

Results

I worked with the AGILE team to bring the design vision to life. User feedback, collected via interviews and surveys, was extremely positive. It also had a positive impact on the business, setting Hopin apart from its competitors.

The project was also showcased at All Hands to the entire organisation as a successful approach to product design and development.
